Key Data is the most trusted data and insights platform for the vacation rental and alternative accommodations space, used by property managers, hosts, investors, and tourism organizations globally.

Unlike its competitors, Key Data sources reservations data directly from lodging providers in over 500 markets in real-time to pull accurate, forward-looking insights. It then aggregates these with data from major OTAs and analyzes them against 45+ KPIs.

The Challenge

Key Data came to Abode Worldwide in January 2023 with very limited press coverage to date, whilst competitors were being quoted as the ‘the’ source of data insight for the sector on a regular basis. Whilst being firmly established with a core customer group, the team wanted to build on their presence in the US, along with other new markets in EMEA. Our mission, through public relations, was to educate potential customers on Key Data’s unique proposition, increase brand mentions in industry and media discussions globally, and give Key Data a greater ‘share of voice’ in the short-term rental market. 

The Key Data team also required quality, data-driven content for their website to attract organic traffic and boost the website’s SEO.

Our Solution

The Abode team got to work on a PR strategy that would support Key Data’s next phase of growth. In line with Key Data’s plans, we spent the first quarter building the company’s reputation in the US and industry press. This included placing thought leadership, reactive comments, and data-driven press releases in US-based publications, as well as US-focused data campaigns such as where Americans were heading for Spring Break. 

Next, our focus was the UK, where we rolled out a number of media campaigns targeting both local and national press. Campaigns included last-minute summer holidays in the UK, the most sought-after tourist destinations, and how much the UK’s economy was boosted by the King’s Coronation. The result was greater visibility as a leading data provider for the UK STR market.

Throughout the year, the Abode team also crafted regular short-term rental market data lookbacks for industry press, announced pivotal partnerships, and released a number of market data reviews including Greece, Spain and Portugal which achieved significant in-market pick-up.

For content, Abode got to work on monthly SEO-driven blog content strategies, covering a range of topics, themes and guides. Through content, the aim was to inform and educate customers, as well as draw in new traffic and interest through targeted keyword SEO. 

Results

As a result of Abode’s PR efforts, Key Data is now positioned as a leading data source for vacation rentals featured in articles across national, international, trade, consumer, DMO and business titles. This has achieved 6.42 million combined estimated views, over 8K social media engagements (excluding LinkedIn), and significant reputation building.

Our Spring Break campaign featured in local US publications including Wisconsin State Journal, Los Angeles Daily News and St Louis Dispatch, whereas our UK Coronation campaign landed on the front page of The Evening Standard – the UK’s largest daily newspaper by print circulation. Key Data regularly appears in top industry titles including Skift, PhocusWire and Travolution. 

Key Data won the Vacation Rental Management Association’s Supplier of the Year (2023) award.
